Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Champion Of Gender Equality, Dies At 87

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the demure firebrand who in her 80s became a legal, cultural and feminist icon, died Friday. The Supreme Court announced her death, saying the cause was complications from metastatic cancer of the pancreas.

The court, in a statement, said Ginsburg died at her home in Washington, D.C., surrounded by family. She was 87.

“Our nation has lost a justice of historic stature,” Chief Justice John Roberts said. “We at the Supreme Court have lost a cherished colleague. Today we mourn but with confidence that future generations will remember Ruth Bader Ginsburg as we knew her, a tireless and resolute champion of justice.”

Architect of the legal fight for women’s rights in the 1970s, Ginsburg subsequently served 27 years on the nation’s highest court, becoming its most prominent member. Her death will inevitably set in motion what promises to be a nasty and tumultuous political battle over who will succeed her, and it thrusts the Supreme Court vacancy into the spotlight of the presidential campaign.

Petition to Recall Stockton Unified School District Trustees

Petition to Recall Stockton Unified School District Trustees

In the middle of a public health crisis, four Trustees of the Stockton Unified School Board conspired to force, and then voted to accept, the resignation of Superintendent John Deasy in a secretive emergency meeting on April 21, 2020.

Trustees Kathy Garcia, Maria Mendez, Scot McBrian, and Cecelia Mendez did this during the COVID 19 pandemic in a tele-conference meeting, with virtually no public participation or input, with no explanation of why they were forcing this action, and with no plan on how to run the District during this challenging time.

Superintendent Deasy was in the role for less than two years of a three-year contract. His resignation makes him the seventh Superintendent in 15 years to leave SUSD, and will cost taxpayers hundreds of thousands of dollars as we head into an economic recession.

Over the course of the campaign to remove Superintendent Deasy, the actions of these four trustees led to the Board violating the Brown Act several times. These trustees also forced the hiring of outside, additional legal counsel to enact their agenda at a cost of hundreds of thousands of dollars to the District and then sought to reinstate a former superintendent who was removed from his job under a cloud of scandal. Lastly, and most upsettingly, given that the School Board’s energy has been focused on personal politics rather than on what is best for our young people, the District has fallen behind in planning for how students will return to school amid the pandemic.

  • With the hiring of Interim Superintendent Brian Biedermann, we the voters of SUSD have to ensure that he has a stable school board to support his leadership, and to support the efforts of District management, teachers, and classified employees. However, the trustees who removed Superintendent Deasy from his position are only poised to further their chaotic agenda, leaving Interim Superintendent Biedermann weakened as the District’s newest leader.

This is why we are asking you to join our campaign today and to support our petition to recall Maria Mendez and Scot McBrian from their SUSD Board Trustee positions.

They chose to put petty politics before the well-being of our children, and in doing so, endangered the health and safety of Stockton children and their families. They have also put SUSD’s finances under further strain. SUSD needs stability, and Interim Superintendent Brian Biedermann needs a professional and ethical Board of Trustees behind him.

SIGN THIS PETITION to recall Trustees Maria Mendez and Scot McBrian from their position on the Stockton Unified School Board. Their conduct in the recent firing of Superintendent John Deasy and in regard to Brown Act meeting violations is not of the caliber of professionalism or expertise required to effectively govern SUSD for the best interests of our children.

By signing this petition, you are pledging to sign a recall initiative ballot as soon as such a public campaign is safe to accomplish. You also pledge to support community efforts and the efforts of Families for a Better School Board to remove them from office by sharing my concerns with neighbors, family, and friends who vote within their districts.

By signing this pledge, you are giving permission to Families for A Better School Board to contact me for future campaign efforts.
